Background - | With law degrees in both Canada and South Africa and more than 20 years of experience as a litigator and 15 years as an arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator, Yasmeena Mohamed, brings a wealth of substantive knowledge, expertise and practical insights on matters related to human rights, employment and labour law. Yasmeena has worked on behalf of both employers and unions and hence has a deep respect for both parties and is able to fully understand each parties perspective and underlying goals and is able to find amicable solutions as a resoect of her dual perspective . For the past 11 years, Ms. Mohamed has served as a Senior Counsel with the Province of Ontario, where she is a respected subject matter expert in the realm of labour, employment law, human rights, workplace safety insurance, occupational health safety, and LTD benefits and pensions. Ms Mohamed is currently on the Ministry of Labour's list of arbitrators and in addition, she provides mediation and consultation services to both union and management organizations. Ms Moahmed served as cousnel to the Human Rights Commission and as member and Vice Chair to the Human Rights Tribunal for 8 years. Ms mohamed also served a Vice Chair for the Labour Relations Board and member of the Immigartion and Refugee Baord. In 2000, Ms Mohamed was selected to project manage, establisha and operationalize an alternative Tribuanal to hear and adjudicate Long Term Disability Claims. Yasmeena was a key palyer in esteblishing the ( LTD) Income Protection- Joint Insurance Benefits Review Committee ( JIBRC) . Ms Mohamed's responsibilities included everything from the selection and training of adjudicators to the negotiation of rules of procedure the JIBRC Tribunal. Ms. Mohamed also spent some time as Senior Counsel with the Ontario Human Rights Commission, where, in addition to regular appearances before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and Superior Court of Justice, she drafted legal opinions to the Commissioners on issues related to discrimination and harassment in public, private and unionized employment and services. Prior to joining the provincial government's legal team, Yasmeena worked in private practice protecting client interests in matters related to labour law; employment matters, and represented both claimants and defendants at various labour and employment tribunals. Her passion for this field of practice was inspired by her articling experiences with one of the premier union-side employment and labour law firms in Toronto - Ryder Wright Blair & Doyle - where she had the opportunity to collaborate on mediations, arbitrations and settlement conferences on cases related to grievances, professional disciplinary matters, health & safety standards, insurance disability and pension entitlements, and wrongful dismissals. She also articled with Bowens Attorneys in South Africa, where she appeared at internal security hearings and trials for contravention of apartheid-related legislation, in addition to handling various labour, employment, insurance and workers compensation matters. In 2006, Ms. Mohamed obtained her ADR Mediator certification through the University of Windsor Law School, and now offers arbitration and mediation services for labour and employment disputes, including collective agreement disputes, human rights, workplace safety insurance, occupational health & safety, and long term disability benefits and pensions. Augmenting her extensive professional experience, Yasmeena is a workpalce investgator and certified Human Rights Trainer, and is actively involved in community organizations such as the Co-chair of International Relief Development Fund and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. |
